Saif Ali Khan

‘All men must marry much younger women’
by KATHIKA KANDPAL
There’s an old world charisma about him. Yet he’s the metaphor of new age ‘cool’. He’s the actor who’s moved beyond the fickle Fridays

‘I’ll continue to be spotted with HARMAN’
What’s the fun of playing a gangster as you did in the recent ‘Bullett Raja’?
I enjoyed playing cops and robbers as a child. Playing the robber was more fun than playing the cop. Al Pacino’s ‘Scarface’ is the best gangster film I’ve ever watched. I’ve always wanted to play a role like that. Twenty two years into my career, I finally got the chance with ‘Bullett Raja’. I did play Langda Tyagi, a gangster in ‘Omkara’. But he was a villain while Raja Mishra in ‘Bullet Raja’ is a hero.
How have you changed as an actor?
I look better, I act better, I have become calmer, more patient.
Being uber-cool, you could fit in Hollywood as well?
You would have to earn your way there. You have to move to Los Angeles and begin your struggle. Our industry is exploding. One day our special effects will become incredible. One day we will rival Hollywood.
Has marriage to Kareena Kapoor the best thing that has happened to you?
Of course I can say that. (Laughs) No, it’s not the best thing, it’s a good thing that has happened to me. (Thinks) Okay, it is the best thing that has happened to me.
What has Kareena added to your life?
Stability and checkered tablecloths!
Kareena says you have introduced her to a life beyond the movies…
I was lucky I grew up in a home where my mother was a successful actress and my father a famous cricketer. There was life beyond movies, in terms of conversation and experience. Stardom doesn’t last forever. The idea is not to end up lost and depressed when it’s gone. You also have to enjoy life. Kareena’s a great partner to experience these things with. We both have a similar spirit of adventure. Last time, we visited Florence. We travelled alone with just a map in our hands. There was a warm sense of togetherness. We were tourists. We ate pizza in a quiet place. We enjoyed all that.
What do you enjoy when you’re not shooting?
Reading, fishing, travelling, trekking, watching TV… I watch American TV shows. Recently, I have been watching Da Vinci’s Demons, Suits and Modern Family.
People say age gap affects a relationship…
I’d advise all men to marry much younger and beautiful women. (Laughs) How is it a great thing? It’s fairly obvious.
Has Kareena surprised you with her maturity?
I usually expect her to be. On a serious note, I think we are fine. Men mature a little later and women age faster. A 43-year-old man is actually like a 25-year-old. Alec Baldwin said in 30 Rock, “A rich 50 is more like a regular guy at 38.” You should be on the same energy level with your partner despite the age gap. You shouldn’t be too tired and want to go to sleep when she wants to… go dancing!

What works in your relationship with Kareena?
The fact that we lead our own lives and enjoy our space. We come home and relax together. We like doing the same things. I don’t enjoy ‘boy’s night out’. I have a career, which takes me to places and also gives us space.
